Martin Luther King Jr was one of important names for American people. January 15 is as important as his name because it is his birthday. He was born on January 15, 1929 and died on April 4, 1968. In the eyes of the world, Martin Luther King Jr, who became activist and prominent leader in African-American civil rights movement, has become an icon of human rights.
All his life was spend by being an activist of civil rights. He started it by leading Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.
Because of his movements of civil rights and his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means, in 1964 he got the Nobel Peace Price. He became the youngest Nobel Peace Price receiver.
Martin Luther King Jr was killed on April, 1968 in Memphis, Tennesse. In 1977, USA goverment awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. To honor him, Martin Luther King Jr was established as U.S national holiday in 1986.
